Ethical Hacker Works To Protect Companies

They can strike at any time but you'll never see them coming. They're computer hackers and they're spreading cyber mayhem throughout the business world. In fact, experts say computer crimes cost America an estimated $50 billion a year. Now some companies are fighting back by hiring, of all things, professional hackers

American John Horton what is known as an ethical hacker. Horton has the world at his fingertipshas the world at his fingertips. He is one of a new generation of computer hackers, hired by companies to put computer networks to the test. "We only do hacking to attack and penetrate a computer system that a customer has asked us to come in to see if there are any security weaknesses," Horton said. "We see it as a good thing. As a way to make sure a network is safe." Horton is actually being paid to hack into websites. He says by telling companies what's wrong and where to improve network security, he's saving them millions of dollars. Horton says he can crack most company codes in just a day or two. For a computer crook, looking to steal and syphon money, it's time well spent. "It's for fun. To see what they can damage.. What kind of pain they can inflict on people that don't take the time to protect their network," Horton said of malicious hackers. "Some are trying to steal credit card information." Experts say the average computer fraud case will cost a business more than $100,000. But interestingly enough, most hackers who are caught never serve jail time. Instead they're hired by government agencies.
