Beeb bundles multimedia into search

The BBC has added the ability to search audio and visual content to its relaunched and reinvigorated search engine for its website.

Visitors to bbc.co.uk can search selected television and radio programmes in addition to audio and video content from the BBC's news, radio and sports archives.

Initially a limited selection of around 300,000 clips is being indexed - including EastEnders highlights, The Archers and the Chris Moyles breakfast show - with the full catalogue scheduled to be searchable later this year.

'This re-launch marks the first stage in our aim of creating services that enable our audiences to find BBC content - whether text, audio or video - through ever easier navigation,' said Ashley Highfield, the BBC's director of New Media and Technology.

He added that the new search tool is the first stage in a radical overhaul of the BBC website. The relaunched search engine uses technology from enterprise software company Autonomy. It will run in parallel with an Internet-wide search powered by Microsoft's Windows Live Search (formerly MSN Search), with the results provided side-by-side.

Daniel Mermelstein, head of search products at the BBC News website, said that the results page has been redesigned to match what people expect to see.

'It's a much more standard search interface,' he said. 'People expect a certain way of displaying the results and for data to follow that convention.'
