AirMagnet Sets Standard for Mobile Workforce Security
AirMagnet Inc., the award-winning leader in wireless network assurance, has set a new standard for secure wi-fi with its introduction of AirMagnet StreetWISE, a family of professional endpoint security software products developed specifically for the enterprise. Unlike existing wireless endpoint products -- which savvy workers render useless by disabling or removing them, connecting to unsecured networks and exposing confidential corporate data -- StreetWISE cannot be circumvented by end users. StreetWISE is the only enterprise-grade wireless endpoint security platform, with a unique client self-defense feature that prevents end users from evading or disabling it.
AirMagnet StreetWISE is available in three different software versions, giving it the flexibility to meet the needs of a variety of end users:
- StreetWISE lets administrators create policies and manually install software on end-user laptops.
- StreetWISE Central is administrator controlled and managed from a central server for easy deployment on a large number of end-user and remote machines.
- StreetWISE Personal is a freeware version available for consumer download to set security parameters for personal or shared laptops that gives end users complete control over all policies.
Gartner Research predicts that by 2008, 41 million corporate employees worldwide will spend at least one day a week teleworking and 100 million will work from home at least one day a month.(1) While laptops have been widely embraced by mobile workers for their convenience and flexibility, their increased networking options make it easy for data on corporate laptops to be compromised.
"The corporate laptop is one of the most dangerous points of vulnerability for any enterprise," said Rachna Ahlawat, research director at Gartner. "To be truly secure, corporations need a way to exert strict control over how laptops are used in public wireless environments."
StreetWISE enables network administrators to eliminate areas of wireless endpoint security concerns and adhere to company guidelines by:
- Enforcing wi-fi security by setting strict thresholds and preventing connections to devices that fail to meet administrators' defined security standards. Approved hardware lists can also be specified, so users can't circumvent designated policies by buying their own hardware.
- Employing location-aware policies that adapt to users' locations, with the ability to tie policies to a number of places, for example, employing more stringent security when connecting to a public wireless network than to the office WLAN.
- Controlling communication ports to enable or disable wi-fi, Bluetooth, or infrared to define and administer how end users may communicate via wireless connections.
- Preventing end-user mistakes that create security holes, such as simultaneously connecting to a wired and wireless network -- also known as dual homing -- or ad hoc networking.
- Complying with regulations through StreetWISE's certifications -- including FIPS 140-2 and Microsoft WHQL -- and U.S. Army and U.S. Army TIC approval.
"The mobile workforce is now an integral piece of nearly every enterprise. As such, corporations must develop strategies for wireless endpoint security, or risk exposing financial resources and other vital or confidential information," said Chia-Chee Kuan, CTO and vice president of engineering at AirMagnet. "We created StreetWISE to meet a significant demand from network administrators for a wireless endpoint security product that guarantees the integrity of corporate data on end-user laptops. From client self-defense to location awareness to StreetWISE's regulatory compliance, each feature in this product makes StreetWISE the essential wireless endpoint security tool for enterprises."
