Microsoft Releases New OneCare Beta
Microsoft released a new beta version of Windows Live OneCare on Monday, which is compatible with Vista, has international market support, and includes more back-up options.
Microsoft announced a new beta version of Windows Live OneCare, version 1.5, on Monday. The security software is now compatible with Vista and available for download free of charge.
OneCare 1.0 was released in June, and is still available for $49.95 per year. On Monday, Microsoft announced that OneCare 1.5 now has international market support, unified antivirus and antispyware filtering capabilities, more back-up options, and the ability to run on both Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista beta.
OneCare is an antivirus, antispyware, and firewall protection program that runs quietly in the back of an operating system. Once the program is out of beta, there will be an annual fee of $49.95, but Microsoft could not speculate about when that would be.
"Microsoft will continue to release betas as part of an extensive testing and development process before their final release to the public," a Microsoft spokesperson said in an e-mail to PC Magazine on Monday. "Windows Live OneCare v1.5 beta will evolve throughout the beta process, based on internal testing and consumer feedback. Microsoft plans to release these features to both existing and new subscribers during the Windows Vista general availability timeframe."
