Companies 'fear breaches but don't improve IT security'
Using encryption devices such as Virtual Private Networks can save companies from becoming high profile victims of hackers, like TK Maxx parent company TJX, claimed an IT security expert.
Companies are increasingly living in fear of data breaches that could expose the enterprise to public humiliation and loss of customer trust.
Michael Ruffolo, CEO of Liquid Machines told the Gartner IT Security Summit: "If your business is such that you have to share information, you're in a difficult position because of the data loss epidemic."
He told the meeting that some clients were scared to push send because when they do "they lose control".
Despite these fears, he said that some companies do not invest in encryption devices and IT security until it is too late.
White House cybersecurity czar told the Search Security website at a breakfast during the summit that many companies are failing to protect themselves adequately from attack. He explained they do not take precautions like encryption simply because they think that a lack of evidence of an attack means they have not been targeted.
He added that what really mattered was protecting sensitive information, not merely protecting the WAN, and he suggested companies learn exactly where their sensitive data is and take steps such as restricting access to protect it.
