Google Apps: Five million students getting a cloud education
As students get ready to head back to university this autumn, five million of them will be using Google Apps. The number of students using the apps suite has doubled 400 per cent year-on-year, Google said.
Google Apps, which covers communication, collaboration and security apps, is a major front in Google's battle to gain control of the desktop.
As well as targeting businesses, Google is also focusing its efforts on education as it seeks to increase its share of the office software market.
According to the search giant, the millions of students using the Education Edition of its apps suite are spread across thousands of schools in 145 countries.
In the UK, educational institutions using Apps include Leeds Metropolitan University, Kingston College, and the School of Oriental and African Studies, which recently estimated it has saved £650,000 by choosing the Google cloud service.
The University of Portsmouth is also a recent convert to Google Apps, announcing earlier this month that it has started to offer ad-free access to the service to 30,000 students.
