Microsoft facing new hacker threat

Technicians at the US software giant Microsoft are working flat out to prevent a new security threat that could this week give criminals access to computer systems used worldwide by banks and governments, reports The Business newspaper. Flaws in Microsoft software allow hackers to use replica internet banking sites to empty customers' accounts. The latest computer security alarm has been triggered by the sudden appearance of three new breaches in one of Microsoft's most popular products, Internet Explorer. According to a Microsoft spokesperson: 'Microsoft is investigating reports of a malicious attack exploiting vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer. The attack can enable a malicious user to execute code on a computer system.' Leading banks say they are doing everything possible to prevent criminals from gaining access to individual accounts. There is no evidence yet that bank computer systems are being breached, although banks are notoriously reluctant to discuss instances.
