Big Web Server Attack Planned for Sunday
Computer crackers are coordinating a mass web site defacement attack for July 6, it emerged yesterday. Security companies and government advisory agencies warned that hackers intend to take down 6,000 sites in six hours on Sunday. The New York State Office of Cyber Security & Critical Infrastructure Coordination was first off the mark with a public advisory, warning government entities to backup their servers and take a number of other security measures. The CSCIC said it had seen "some reconnaissance scanning, which seeks to identify vulnerable web sites". This scanning is reportedly at an increased level to the normal background noise of port scans. A web page at defacers-challenge.com yesterday outlined details of the plan, which was presented in the form of a competition, but was unavailable as of press time yesterday. The site promised rewards including storage space to the person or group to win the most points during the six-hour competition period. Participants would get 5 points for hacking a Unix box, 1 point for hacking Windows.
