Dear Customer,

Welcome to the GSS monthly update of news, views and advice surrounding today’s top IT security issues.

September is here, the kids are back at school and that holiday in the sun seems a lifetime ago - if you are suffering from the holiday blues have a go at the ‘Office at Risk’ interactive game included in this month’s newsletter provided by Lumension Security.

Last month was an eye opener for me. On the Wednesday the TK Max WiFi hackers were convicted in the USA, I got a call from a producer at Sky News. They needed to interview someone about the security issues of WiFi. Initially we expected to do a telephone interview, but the producer wanted someone in the studio. So I cleared my schedule and moved an appointment and set off for Sky’s studio in Osterley, West London. See the interview below.

This month we have been asked many questions around the data leakage stories consistently hitting the headlines.  As a result of this we have featured an article in this month's reader Q&A about the seven best practice recommendations for CEO’s to protect their organisations.  Read the article below.  Also in this month's newsletter, find out how you can save computing history and discover if your organisation is on the reported list of vulnerable sites.

As always, thank you for all your feedback and suggestions, please keep them coming and email me with any comments.

What every CEO should know

While the world of trouble caused by security breaches is obvious every time an executive picks up the newspaper, many CEOs aren't sure if their company could be in the headlines next. Security breaches impact a company's bottom line and thus no longer only require the attention of security personnel, but also the executive team, including the CEO.

In an effort to remove the barrier between the information security personnel and top decision makers, this month, Lumension Security's CEO Patrick Clawson, provides his insight of the 7 key issues that every CEO should know about Information Security.

Bletchley Park faces a bleak future

Bletchley Park faces a bleak future

15 years or so ago, Bletchley Park, the home of the first programmable computer and wartime cryptographers in Milton Keynes, was under threat from being bulldozed in favour of housing and industrial development. At the time a small group of enthusiasts campaigned locally and within the Computing and IT security community, raised funds to acquire the site, establish a trust and turned Bletchley into a museum and educational centre.  But the Bletchley site is again under threat.

Pauline Brace, Principal Information Security Consultant at GSS, talks about her experiences with Bletchley and why it's worth saving...

Carlin accelerate away

August has seen GSS supported Carlin Motorsport’s British F3 team really start to accelerate away from the competition. They have won 9 out of the last 10 races. They scored the championship’s first ever 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th  at Spa in Belgium. No team has ever finished 1st, 2nd 3rd in the championship. We believe all three of the carlin drivers have the talent to stand a very real chance of getting to F1, to join 6 other ex Carlin drivers!

Team Mermaid battle in Liverpool

Team Mermaid battled it out last month in the fourth weekend of the British F4 Offshore Powerboat Championship season at Liverpool. With turbulent weather, the race was nearly cancelled. After being hit and slowed down by one of the other boats turning a mark, we secured a 4th place spot - should have been a podium! The final racing weekend of the season takes place in Douglas, Isle of Man, on 13th and 14th September. Contact us if you would like to attend.
